Rights, laws and duties
Most important laws
Marriage and family laws: You are a legal adult at the age of 18. From the age of 18, you are legally allowed to get married, as long as the partners stay independent and take responsibility for themselves.
Religious freedom of thought: Anyone can have their own religious beliefs. They are not going to be discriminated if they believe something different to what the larger population believes.
Civil laws: You can’t have more than one spouse. If the child is over 13 years old, it can choose which parent it would like to live with. Both parents of the child must pay for child support until the child is 18 years old.
Obligatory rights: Children must attend school until they have finished grade 12. If they have dropped out, night school is available, but it is very difficult to get a good job if you do not have your diploma for grade 12. You must do a minimum of 2 years in the military or community service after grade 12. You must be insured at all times.
Penalty Codes:
When caught speeding more than 3 times, the license will be taken away for 1 year. If taxes are not paid for more than 6 months, without valid reasoning, there is a possibility you will be taken to court. Serious crimes like robbery, murder and assault are tried in court and dealt with depending on the severity of the crime.
Laws of transport:
You can only drive if you have a driving license. The license needs to be renewed every 5 years. After the age of 65, you have to take another test, to see if you are still eligiable to drive. This test has to be repeated every 18 months thereafter.
Laws of higher education:
Once you have finished grade 12, you are allowed to choose which path you would like to take: university, military or working.
Immigration laws:
To enter Fortem, you need to go through an immigration process. Tourists enter on a tourist visa valid for a maximum of 2 months. Residence permits are issued on a case by case basis.
